Judge: Dr Peter Baltzer
Dr. Peter Baltzer is a dentist practicing in Powell River BC. Peter’s
first purebred dog was an Old English Sheepdog that he rescued in
1979. Peter acquired his first Deerhound in 1985 and has been dedicated
to the breed ever since. Breeding under the kennel name of Dunkeld
since 1990, he has produced three breeder/owner/handled American
National Specialty BIS winners.

“I bought my first Saluki, Can Eng Ch Burydown Furudasht,
in 1973, for 69 guineas from the inimitable Hope Waters, who then
persuaded me to enter him at the club open show at Windsor. I demurred,
certain that all show people are certifiably insane. In the end,
of course, I went, walked Bannon into the show and won my class.”
"Convinced this showing/handling business was
much over-rated (it seemed so easy!) I hit the deck running upon
my arrival in Canada and was shocked to find I really had to know
how to handle. Leaving a group ring in Quebec, I lurched into the
hands of Martha Thorne who let me know in no uncertain terms that
I had “thrown away” a Group and was to attend her handling
classes in Montreal. That hooked me into the show scene for the
next two and a half years to learn, as it were, my craft.”
“Returning to England, the show ring and the
field, I began editing the Saluki Club Magazine, interviewed for
Saluki Heritage and served on virtually every committee for the
club and the coursing section.”
“I have an ongoing genetic project with the
Vet College and have amassed a good network of colleagues and instructors
for physiotherapy with injured running dogs. Paddy Sweeney, the
greyhound vet, and Mary Bromley, the Lambourn physiotherapist (horses
and humans) have been my mentors.”
“My great love is judging on the field for
Salukis, Greyhounds, Whippets, Deerhounds and Lurchers. I received
my National Coursing Club license some years ago and am, as far
as I know, the only person to judge on the field and at Champion
Show level.”
